Colors in Maurice

Before I left to Mauritius, I got schooled by a photographer I admire. He told me straight up: my colors suck, my editing sucks.

So in Mauritius, I spent 2 weeks with one focus: shoot photos with rich colors.

Colors are super hard. I compare it a bit to notes in a chord. When a chord sounds good to the human ear, it's because the frequencies of the individual notes somehow match and resonate. It gives comfort to your ear.

Colors work the same way. A chord is built from frequencies in sound, and your eye does the same thing with light — it samples three 'channels' of frequency through your cones, and your brain blends them into what you perceive as color. When those frequencies go well together, it gives comfort to your eyes. But it's so much harder than music — because of all the dimensions color has. A note is just a frequency. A color has hue, saturation, brightness... all at once.

Really still figuring it out, and from time to time I have the feeling I am getting nowhere when I see those beautiful deep colors some photographers produce. But at least I had fun trying.
